GO VAN GOGHS!
The Vincentia Van Goghs Rugby Union Football Club
The Van Goghs began in 2001 when a few would be Rugby players thought they may have one year of Rugby left in them and decided to form a Club.
The Australian Rugby Union was contacted and we were informed that we would have to come up with 15 interested persons to form a Club. We looked around the bar at the local Golf Club and concluded that this would be easy. And subsequently a group of motley looking men fell in to line and formed the Vincentia Van Goghs Rugby Union Football Club.
The choice of name came after several rounds and much discussion, name s like the Husky hammerheads, bay and basin bulls were thrown around when the newly formed Committee decided that as we were representing the Vincentia area a name consistent with the area was most appropriate. Some one I believe a schoolteacher said ‘the Vincentia Van Goghs.’ The name seemed to roll off the tongue so easily it was unanimously accepted with the added line ‘we will make Rugby an art form’. The Club was born.
The Van Goghs have had tremendous support and sponsorship from the local community since our inception. We have up to 600 persons at our home games and a crowd of over a thousand attended last years Grand Final at home.
We have been very successful in the Far South Coast Competition. We took out the Competition in our first year defeating Batemans Bay 18 – 14. We have been Grand finalists for the last three years. A narrow loss to the Sharks last year has left the team with a burning desire to take out the Grand Final this year.
Come and see the Van Goghs play at Van Gogh Park behind the Bay and Basin Leisure Centre on Saturdays. Our first home game is on the 9th of April 2005. Games commence at 12.30 with the main Game at 3.00pm.
