BOMADERRY AFL - ‘TIGER TALK’

Archived results Round 1

FIRST GRADE

Whilst it was great to kick the season off with a win, the ‘Southern Cross Contractor’ sponsored Tigers should now realise they have plenty of work ahead of them if they are to reach their full potential.
Slow starts in the first and third term and a last quarter fade out, suggests that despite their youth, there is still plenty of work to be done on the training track with respect to fitness and in the skills department.
Having said that, the signs were fairly encouraging. Promising young players Matt Dall’Orto, David Mather and Luke Carter made their First Grade debuts and did enough to suggest they can handle the step up.
Andrew Ellis has only had a handful of games in the seniors, as have Matthew Hickmott and Tom Craig despite being members of last first grade premiership success.
Newcomers, Greg Wallace, Mishka Rayner and Aaron Daykin had outstanding debuts for the Club.
Wally was rock solid at centre halfback completely shutting down his opponent, Dayks was impressive in the back pocket and Mishka with 4 goals from the centre was clearly a match winner.

Others to impress, include skipper Bradley Graham with 5 goals, Matty Ganderton who despite being double tagged, still managed to gain plenty of possessions and restrict Simon Blizzard’s influence on the game.
Andrew Lee showed plenty of his ability at both ends despite being underdone, Brent Tyrell controlled the rucks all day, Matty Hickmott ran well off half back and Daniel Hobbs and Tom Craig gained plenty of ball around the ground.
All in all a reasonable effort, but more importantly, one that we can build on.

With players hoping to return in the coming weeks, its up to everyone, new and old, to put in the hard work, week in, week out, if you want to retain your positions. Reputations count for little as we have come to learn under Marty, so don’t let yourselves down.

RESERVE GRADE

In a replay of last years grand final, Bomaderry’s young brigade (Sticks & Webby excluded) put in a good even team performance that eventually saw them draw clear of the Demons in the last quarter, and register a first round victory.
With Albatross boasting a much larger and more experienced combination, the Tigers had to work extremely hard for their points.
Poor disposal and silly errors threatened to cost the Tigers particularly in the first three quarters, but in the end, Bomaderry’s fitness, and the enthusiasm of the young blokes proved too much for the Tross, who appeared to run out of legs.
A telling factor, was the move of Jarrod McCann onto Shina, who until late in the 3rd quarter, had been allowed to sit across half back unattended and pick up easy disposals and direct traffic.
Others to play well for the Tigers include Terry Milne who was dominant all day, Luke Elliott who seems switched on at last and determined to play to his ability, Tim Craig across half forward, Plugger in the ruck, Dave Webb and James Bond. Whilst unable to train, Mark McCann, Aaron Hannam and Stuart Brown made worthwhile contributions and will surely improve with match practice.
Last but not least, a special mention to Michael Burke who in his first game of AFL, kicked a goal and did a couple of things that suggest he should pick the game up fairly quickly.
One of the most pleasing aspects to come out of the game was the tackling and smothering by in particular our smaller and less experienced players, which suggests the training drills are paying dividends.

This Week

This weekend we are at home against Camden in what is sure to be two very tough and entertaining matches.
Camden were run away winners in reserve grade last week, whilst their seniors will no doubt be on the rebound following a first round loss to Northern Districts. From all accounts, Camden has recruited well and are looking to establish themselves as a competition front runner.
With ANZAC day commitments sure to play a part, Bomaderry will again have to rely on their youth, who will hopefully, have benefited from the exposure last weekend. Promises to be a great day, so make sure you come along and show your support.
Reserve grade starts at 1230 and First grade at 2.00 pm. As this is a home game and we have the canteen, if there are any parents, wives or girlfriends among you that are willing to help out in the canteen during the day, please come and see Katy or Julieanne.
The more helpers we can get, the less time we have to spend in the canteen and collectively the more satisfying it will be for everyone.

On the social scene, it was great to see Paul from the Husky Pub at the football on Saturday.
To often, a lot of our sponsors are unable to get along to the footy due to work commitments which is a shame.
Whilst I was unable to get back to the Pub for the awards, I believe everyone had a good time, particularly Wally, whom I’m lead to believe, fully utilsed his voucher.
Thanks again Paul and the Husky Pub staff for all your support.
We look forward to seeing you whenever you can get along to a game, and similarly, when we can get back and enjoy your hospitality.

In last week’s column, I mentioned that the Club would be holding a Jumper Presentation at the Clubhouse this Saturday night.
Unfortunately, we have decided to postpone it until next weekend, as there are a number of players unavailable due to ANZAC Day commitments.
See next weeks column for all the details. For more information on Club activities (football or social) please contact Katy on 44213221 (AH) or Stretch on 0409148808.

Until next week, Go the Tigers – WHOOA!

Report from South Coast Register Friday 28th April 2005

BOMADERRY'S bright start to the 2005 South Coast AFL season continued on Saturday when they overcame a determined Camden outfit at Artie Smith Oval.
For the second week in a row the young Tigers side had too much running late in the game for tiring opponents.
Starring for the Tigers was full forward Dave Rowland who kicked six majors in his SCAFL debut, while Brad Graham playing a centre-half forward booted home four.
Rowland is the fourth naval recruit to the Tigers club, joining defence force colleagues Miska Rayner, Greg Wallace and Aaron Dakin as new faces at Bomaderry in 2005.
Bomaderry ran with a slight breeze in the first quarter and accurate kicking saw them gain a 10-point advantage at the first break.
Camden fought back well in the second kicking three goals to the Tigers two, to trail by 39-36 at the main break.
The first half of the third quarter saw both teams fight hard to gain the ascendancy.
Camden were competing well in the middle, however young legs saw the Tigers kick away with five goals in the third quarter, and followed this up with another five in the last for a 47-point win.

Tiger's coach Martin Kick said his side showed some pretty good form.
"It's still early days, but I thought in patches we showed we weren't far from getting to where we want to be.
"There a few new players in the club, but we have plenty of depth which is pretty exciting for me.
"It's a good opportunity for all the players to stand up and be counted and show what they have to offer."

Scores: Bomaderry 4-1 6-3 11-7 16-11 (107) Camden 2-3 5-6 6-10 8-12 (60)

Bomaderry goals: D Rowland 6, B Graham 4, N Fitzharding 2, D Gration, B Jefferis, A Ellis and B Tyrell

Bomaderry best: D Gration, D Rowland, A Dakin, L McCann, N Fitzharding, M Ganderton, A Lee. B Jefferis, B Graham, M Rayner.

Anzac Day commitments played havoc for the Albatross Demons in their clash with Northern Districts at Hollymount Park.
The Demons were missing eight first choice players.
The depleted Albatross unit matched Norths in the first half with both teams kicking 5-6 (36) to be level at half-time.
However the Demons were completely outplayed in the final two quarters only adding one behind to their score.
Trent Avery kicked four goals for the home side, while Mark Salmon and Martin Wha each bagged three.
Demon's coach Dane Williams said the scoreboard told the story of the game.
"Obviously it was a disappointing second half," he said.
"Anzac Day commitments didn't help, but we were very poor in the second half.
"It does make it difficult when we have to make wholesale changes in the side, but next week the senior side has a break and after that the side should be a lot more settled for the remainder of the year."
Josh Russell and ruckman were best for the Demons, while Norths centre halfback Jeff Burton was named as man of the match.

Northern Districts 3-2 5-6 9-9 14-14 (98) Albatross 1-1 5-6 5-6 5-7 (37)

Albatross goals: Matt Ryan 3, Luke Christensen, Josh Simms

Albatross best: B Denton, M Ryan, K Duncan, J Russell

Nowra meanwhile struggled in their first game of the season against last year's grand finalists Port Kembla.

The Magpies dominated the clash at Jock Brown Oval kicking 25 goals to Blues three.
The Blues fielded practically a brand new side with only three players from last year's side taking the field.
Despite the big loss Blues' coach Russell Jones came away with a few positives.
"Our guys didn't give up, and improved in the second half," he said.
"Unfortunately the damage was done early.
"The only way from here is up.
"Port Kembla would be hard to beat on any day.
"They are dedicated and hard hitting, present well and played an exceptional team game.
"As long as we get to training and work on a few things we will improve."
Best for Nowra were Brad Clark, Daniel Stebbings and Jake Hardy.

Veteran Syd Weller lost a tooth in the final quarter and was taken to hospital but should be right for next weeks clash with Bomaderry.

Port Kembla 25-9 (159) Nowra 3-7 (25)

Reserve Grade

The Bomaderry Tigers reserves got home in a thriller against Camden on Saturday.
Down 56-32 early in the fourth quarter a six-goal final quarter saw the young Tigers overwhelm

Camden 10-9 (69) to 8-12 (60).

Albatross 9-9 (63) had a good win over Northern Districts 6-4(40).
However the match came to an early finish ten minutes before time with an injury to a Northern Districts player.

In the other game Port Kembla easily accounted for Nowra 14-9 (93) to 3-4 (22).
