Last Saturday saw the ‘Southern Cross Contractor’
sponsored Tigers take on Kiama at Artie Smith oval in a fairly fast flowing but
at times one sided affair. To their credit, Kiama never gave up and combined
well in passages as they repeatedly ran the ball out of the backline through
good teamwork. Unfortunately though, they lack a couple of taller and more
mobile forwards, and with injuries in the first half to a two of their more
experienced players, they struggled in the second half. Full credit to
Bomaderry though, they finally put together 4 quarters of hard running football
and appear to be gaining in the fitness stakes. Alas though, we are now faced
with a lull in proceedings, as there are no first grade games until the 28th
May whilst Reserve grade play this week then have another week off. This is
clearly not a good position to be in, particularly as we prepare for tough
games against Port Kembla and Northern Districts.
Hopefully we can organise a game against another League although I think the
most likely scenario will be an intra-club game. Speaking with Marty after the
game, he was particularly pleased with the effort of vice captain Matty Cace who showed plenty of
commitment in his first hit-out since returning from oversea’s
and also the form of Darren Murray who returned to first grade after strong
performances in reserve grade in recent weeks. Whilst the backline didn’t get a
lot of work, Luke McCann, Greg Wallace and Darren Murray made the most of limited
opportunities. Up forward Scores: Bomaderry Kiama 4 - 4: 28 1

Unfortunately,
there was no reserve grade, although some of the players took the opportunity
to have a training run, before helping to set up and run the canteen which was
most appreciated. This weekend we play Bay and Basin at Vincentia with all
players asked to be at the ground by 1130am. First
grade will be training beforehand, however I’m sure you will already have been
notified as to where and when. In
other Club news, the Club Jackets provided by the Husky Pub look great, whilst
the Club banner featuring our major sponsors, in particular, ‘Southern Cross
Contractors’ and the ‘Husky Pub’ looks fantastic. TRIVIA NIGHT

of May commencing at 6pm. All Club members are expected to attend, whilst
anyone from outside the Club is more than welcome to come along. Cost is $20 a

(180) Kiama 6-2 (38) Story: ALEX ARNOLD Photograph: ROBERT CRAWFORD THE opening bounce, Brent Tyrell flies high and wins the tap down for the Tigers, it goes straight to Aaron Hannam who bursts through the pack and fires off a great pass down field, which Dave Rowland grabs and marks. He steadies from 50 out and slots home the Bomaderry Tigers' first goal of the day in less than 20 seconds. That passage set the scene for the Tigers in their round four clash against Kiama at Artie Smith Oval on Saturday, won by Bomaderry 28-12 (180) to Kiama's 6-2 (38). The cool, overcast weather was a stark contrast to the warmth of recent Saturdays and saw spectators dust off their winter blankets. However with Artie Smith Oval in top shape the game was played in perfect AFL conditions. Anyone who thought the top of the table Tigers wouldn't take the winless Kiama Power seriously were certainly put in their place at quarter time. Coach Marty Kick, despite his side being up 28-6, pulled last year's Tunbridge medal winner (League Best and Fairest) Matt Ganderton from the field for giving away a 50-metre penalty just on the break. Kiama competed well in the second quarter booting three goals, however the Tigers still went to the main break with a commanding five-goal lead. In the third quarter Bomaderry dominated, with full-forward Brad Graham on the end of some quality service from Ganderton and winger Mishka Rayner. Kiama managed to stem the tide with a couple of goals in the third, but in the fourth quarter the floodgates well and truly opened. Bomaderry's superior fitness saw them overrun Kiama kicking 10-4 (64) in the final term, with the visitors only managing a point in reply. Brad Graham took his season tally to 21 with an 11-goal performance and was named best on field. Tigers' coach Marty kick said the aim of his side was to put in a solid four-quarter performance and that's exactly what they did. "Everybody played well," Kick said. "It great to see club vice-captain Matt Case back after he was away on the Kanimbla and Darren Murray was great after some solid performances in the reserves. "We have introduced a policy that if someone gives away a 50 metre penalty they spend some time on the sideline. "Answering back to umpires is something that is no good for anyone and we are trying to help the umpires in that regard. "As a club we are trying to set a standard and some players have to learn the hard way." Unfortunately for the Tigers coach, the proposal for an 18-a-side game, up two from the SCAFL's regular 16 fell through. "That was very disappointing," Kick said. "At first Kiama were interested, however on Thursday night they changed their minds. "Their reasoning was that their top 18 would not be as good as our top 18, however I later found out that five Kiama players were told on Thursday they would not be getting a game on Saturday. "It just doesn't make any sense. "We are here to develop the game of AFL. Any short-term pain they may have suffered by playing the extra two players, would have been more than compensated for in the long term. "Having five players train and then get told they can't play a game isn't going to keep them interested in AFL." Keeping players interested in the game will be a challenge Kick faces over the next couple of weeks as the Tigers first grade side goes 21 days without a game. "Next week would have been the Ulladulla game, while the following week was set down for the North versus South game that fell through," he said. "We then have some tough games against Port Kembla, Northern Districts and Albatross. "Our aim is to play everyone, sum it al up and see where to go to from there." strong for the Albatross Demons in their clash at The Power ran away with the game in second half to record a 17-15 (136) to 8-6 (54) victory. After a big loss to Bomaderry a
fortnight ago, Brett Harrison booted home eight goals for the Power and Royce Simpson kicked five, while ruckman Dale Richardson kicked three for the visitors. Demons' rover Joshua Russell was also rewarded for his efforts with a double. Kicking into a two-goal breeze in
the first quarter However the Demons would not be denied and fought back well in the second quarter kicking four straight, however the Power hung onto their two-goal advantage at half-time. For the second match in a row, Albatross put in a disappointing second-half performance. The Power dominated across the park in the third, kicking six goals, while Albatross could only manage one in reply. While Nowra were competitive early, the fact that no less than 12 players backed up from reserve grade made it an almost impossible task for Nowra. Only inaccuracy from the Northern Tigers prevented the score from blowing our further. Despite the loss Blues coach Russell Jones maintained his positive outlook. "Overall we were undermanned on the day, missing seven or eight players," Jones said. "We struggled against an A-class team that has increased in strength this year after picking up some good players from Wollondilly. "The biggest drama of the day was simply getting enough numbers for the ones. "Having said that it was a
long time before they could get a score in the first quarter - it was like the "Although we always seemed to be second at the ball the boys kept the pressure up, but in the end we ran out of legs. "The boys kept up their never say die attitude and the camaraderie is there. . "We have found another good player in Ian Jordan from Temora and the team continues to improve. Albatross reserve grade side for their clash with Albatross won the toss and elected to run with the breeze, a decision that would prove decisive in their 4-7 (31) to 4-3 (27) win. Albatross kicked three goals in
the first five minutes of the first quarter, and despite only adding one more
goal in the third, the Demons were able to hold off the fast finishing Best players for the Demons were centre Joshua Morgan-Brown, who kicked two of his sides four goals, Adrian Graaf, Jason Hennah and Justin Moore.
